Toronto, ON – On Thursday, 27 June, 2024, morning representatives from international unions across Canada elected John Humphrey, Business representative with IAM District 250 President of the Federal Dockyard Liaison Committee (FDLC).
Representatives from international unions, including the Boilermakers, IBEW, Carpenters, Painters, United Association, Operating Engineers, Sheet Metal Workers and the IAM elected Humphrey in Toronto, ON.
Humphreys begins his term immediately and replaces Richard MacIntyre, the outgoing President of the Committee from the Boilermakers union. Humphrey represents IAM members working the shipyards in Victoria, BC.
“My goal is to raise the profile of the FDLC and make everyone aware, not only that we exist, but that we play a crucial role,” said Humphrey in a written statement. He also underscored the need to grow the membership of the FDLC, as well as the shipbuilding sector in Canada.
Grand Lodge Representative Matt Barnable is also on the FDLC, representing the east coast and voted in the elections.
The Dockyards Liaison Committee was founded in 1967, in Ottawa. The meeting was called by the late IAM General Vice-President Mike Rygus to help unions in the shipbuilding sector better represent their members. They also saw their role as assisting the Federal Government Dockyard Trades and Labour Council.
Humphrey also plans on improving communications so the role of the FDLC is better understood and widely supported.
