Humphrys leads the “Be More Than a Bystander” program, an unparalleled training that has been adopted by large organizations and companies to raise awareness and propel positive action to end violence against women.
“It’s been one of the most successful programs that I’ve ever seen,” said Humphrys, whose professional background is a mixture in both the non-profit and the oil and gas industries, giving her a unique perspective on workplace harassment and bullying.
The program began with men delivering the training to other men, an important element that sets it apart from others. The objective of “Be More Than a Bystander” is to help men understand the impact of gendered violence in the workplace and the role they can have in speaking up.
This one-of-a-kind program tactfully addresses sensitive topics to help participants feel empowered to navigate uncomfortable and possibly harmful situations safely and productively.
“Success is driven by positive culture,” said Humphrys. “The IAM is the first American union to take on this program. That sets a very impressive precedent for your country.”
In January 2023, the IAM became the first labor group in the United States to be trained in the Be More Than a Bystander program when 19 male IAM staff members attended a three-day train-the-trainer course at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center.
Now, those staff members are facilitators who can teach ‘Be More Than a Bystander’ to their colleagues and members of the IAM.
